Our Take

A loud, expensive Vegas-style show with no real connection to Japanese culture

Go regardless if...

You want a deliberately kitsch, ironic night out

About

Tokyo has a category of themed entertainment restaurants including robot restaurants, maid cafes, ninja restaurants, and similar concepts that blend dining with theatrical performance. Most are concentrated in Akihabara and Shinjuku and are priced significantly above equivalent food quality elsewhere. They became popular with international tourists in the 2000s and 2010s as a form of novelty dining.

Time Needed

1.5-2 hours for a typical dinner and show format.

Best Time To Go

Evening for the full show atmosphere. Most put on multiple seatings per night.

Getting There

Varies by venue. Most are in Akihabara or Kabukicho in Shinjuku.

Tips

The food is almost universally a secondary consideration. If you go, go for the spectacle and eat beforehand or after at a place worth the money. The Robot Restaurant in Shinjuku closed permanently in 2022.
