About

The Imperial Palace East Garden is a public garden on the grounds of the former Edo Castle in central Tokyo, open to visitors most days of the year. The garden contains the remains of the castle's innermost defenses including stone walls, turrets, and the main keep foundation. It is one of the few parts of the Imperial Palace grounds accessible to the general public without prior arrangement.

Time Needed

45-60 minutes to walk the main areas.

Best Time To Go

Spring for cherry blossoms or autumn for foliage. The garden is pleasant year-round as a green space in the center of the city.

Getting There

Otemachi Station on multiple lines, 5 minute walk to the Otemon gate entrance.

Tips

Free entry. The garden closes on Mondays, Fridays, and during imperial events. Check the Imperial Household Agency website before visiting as closure dates vary.
