⛩Meiji Shrine
Our Take
Peaceful, beautiful, and surprisingly un-touristy inside the forest walk
Go regardless if...
You walk the full forest path not just the main gate

About
Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Shibuya dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, completed in 1920. The shrine sits within a forested area of 70 hectares in the middle of the city, making it one of the largest green spaces in central Tokyo. It is one of Japan's most visited shrines and receives several million visitors during the New Year period alone.
Time Needed
30-45 minutes for the main shrine approach and grounds.
Best Time To Go
Early morning for a quiet walk through the forested approach. Avoid New Year holidays when crowds are exceptional.
Getting There
Harajuku Station on the Yamanote line, 1 minute walk to the entrance torii gate.
Tips
The forested path to the shrine is as much the point as the shrine itself. Walk slowly. The inner garden (separate admission) is worth it if you have extra time.
