Go regardless if...

You can get there at dawn before the tour groups arrive or you’re not going to Kyoto

About

Senso-ji is a Buddhist temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, and the city's oldest temple dating to 645 AD. It is approached through the Nakamise shopping street and the Kaminarimon gate, one of Tokyo's most photographed landmarks. The temple complex includes several shrines, pagodas, and gardens and draws over 30 million visitors annually.

Time Needed

30-45 minutes for the temple complex itself. Add time if you plan to browse Nakamise.

Best Time To Go

Early morning before 8am to see the temple without the crowds. The atmosphere is completely different from midday.

Getting There

Asakusa Station on the Ginza or Asakusa lines. The Kaminarimon gate is a 5 minute walk from the station.

Tips

The crowds on Nakamise shopping street are relentless from mid-morning onward. If you want to actually experience the temple rather than just photograph it, go early.
